What I don’t understand is…. we have guy/gals making 700 or more hours a year, as casuals (Non-union) on the waterfront, but won’t let them into the ILA… and then we complain about Non-union ports! If non-union ports continue to open at the current pace and then begin to seek out experienced and trained people on the waterfront, those casuals are going to take our training and leave us. We need to make them apart of us before we lose them. Make them whole to grow the ILA…they have earned it!

Mr. Hughes and all negotiating this contract had better keep in mind that your bottom brothers and sisters in the I.L.A. are the future of the I.L.A. To weaken their status and put their job security in jeopardy would be the demise and slow death of this union. For us at the bottom we have had to deal with the low wage scale for the past five years doing the same work as the union brother next us who is making almost double what we are doing the same work. The 16.00 dollar starting rate of pay was bad enough and now it’s possible were not going to get the final raise of the contract that to many of is 1.50 per hour. On top of all this a good majority of us that were hired over the past five years only work nine months or less out of the year. If the powers that be do not go into these contract negotiations with it’s bottom and future union brothers best interest in mind you will be responsible for the death of this union. All it takes is one bad contract to erase years of great progression and job security obtained through smart tough contract negotiations. We haved lived through a bad contract the past five years, we at the bottom will not survive another thus the foundation those at the top stand on shall and will fall out from under them.
