Mission
The Longshore Workers’ Coalition Women’s Vision Group was formed to empower and encourage all women in the International Longshoremen’s Association as well as current and future LWC members. We believe all women who choose to work as longshore workers should have a voice and place on the docks.
Our goal is to build unity around the fight for women’s rights, and we will reach out to even the most unconvinced. We are searching for a true collaboration of thoughts and consideration of ideals. Women are not second-class citizens. We will struggle for respect and justice for all.
Finally, we are in existence to serve. We will serve the LWC, the ILA and the longshore community in an “atmosphere of sisterhood.”
2009 Goals
• Welcome letter to all women currently in the LWC.
• Hold a founding Women’s Vision Group meeting.
• Reach out to all ILA locals about the Women’s Vision Group.
• Decide on specific activities for women at the next LWC Quarterly Membership Meeting.
• Reach out to LWC-friendly locals to request the opportunity to speak to the women of their local face-to-face.
• Create a hotline for any woman in the ILA to reach out to.
• Establish a fundraising program for the Women’s Vision Group.
