The South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District Executive Council, the South-Eastern Dock and Marine Council and the West-Gulf Dock and Marine Council have all reportedly endorsed a proposal to reduce the frequency of the SAGCD Convention meetings from every two years to every four years.

Reportedly some members of the SAGCD Executive Council are concerned with the $500,000 tab to hold a convention meeting and are seeking to save costs.

Leonard Riley, LWC Co-Chair, is concerned about the impact this change would have on member’s voices within the union. “These conventions are the single most important thing we do,” he said.

It’s where we collectively discuss issues important to our members, our jobs and the future of our union. It’s where members can be a part of setting the rules for running our own organization.”

Besides, we should look at the whole financial picture of the SAGCD to evaluate the financial health of our district.”
